Last 2 weeks of Foundation Term

and yes, once again, im moving on to another phase in army life. SCS Foundation term, better known as BSLC is coming to an end already. Havent blogged in a couple of weeks, due to the hectic past weeks of live firing and field camp, coupled with much navigation exercises.

cant talk in detail about them online, but yeah it definitely can last a pretty long time for a conversation.

anyway thursday is the interview for RECCE HQ.
i have no idea how i managed to be the only guy in the entire company to get selected for recce.

went to google around for recce training and this is what i found on google:

Criteria: Highest security clearance/ Non-malay (thats what they said) / A Levels

High key Events:
1) Fast march 50km
2) Swim in the Sea with FBO (20kg+ weights)
3) Go for some Prisoner of War treatment
4) Learn to ride motorbike with Stunts
5) Lots of field camp and 72km marches within 24 hours

Only slack thing: No need wear helmet. Wear Grass hat.

anyway i walked past recce troopers today, looked damn xiong. Some guy carrying 2 matadors and sprinting.
and i researched and found that got people die during SG recce training before.

had an awesome week in which i really felt like a civilian!

let me just make a list to remind me of the stuff i did, before i forget!

(supposed to be packing for uo field camp)

i watched Priest the movie, which was quite cool. Had a great friday night early bookout dinner!

Priest was quite a cool movie, with lots of CGI effects.
Movie used scare through shock, like the demons would not fully die and suddenly pop up here and there.
Whole idea of it was quite okay! Not as good as FastFive though.. i think

Went cycling with the cellgroup at ECP, which was fun!
Cycled all the way from ECP to Safti Ferry Terminal, where i could see Tekong and my dear Raven coy once again.

Then met up with the army dudes, went to have Kenny Rogers and played pool! Talk rubbish until 1140 then had to run for the train -,-

Had family dinner on sunday and slacked the day away, watching the apprentice!
The apprentice gave me a super lot of ideas and really re-enforced the reason why i felt i should take business. It really is the area at which im interested in.

Watched Thor on monday and had starbucks! Half price only so the taste felt half as good..

Nahh it tasted the same haha. Bought books at borders for the first time, two of which were business related and one health.

Went prawning on tuesday and finally booked in. SIGH!

There was this story regarding the Wright Brothers. If you happen not to know who they are or what they did, they invented the first airplane and allowed man to take flight.

What you dont know is the way they operated. Whenever the brothers had a disagreement with each other, they would first argue for their points aggressively. Then 10 minutes later, they would have a time-out, and argue for each other.

This means that they would take the stance of the other party and argue against themselves. In such a way, the brothers would then be able to understand each other's reasons for objection or proposal way better.

Cool or what? I think many arguments could be resolved this way.

But one thing i wouldn't have any dilemma over, is about going to starbucks tmr!

Longest Weekend Yet

let me share my joy! haha

friday is a half day. the reason is because the second half of the day is for people to retake ippt. and since i achieved gold, i can just book out at three! planning to go watch a movie, The Lost Bladesman and have dinner (:

saturday and sunday are weekends! no cellgroup, but instead going East Coast Park cycling woohoo. havent cycle since ages ago, and i really enjoy it, the reason being i have cycled like only 12 times in my life, so there's the thrill still. meeting up with army bros at night probably! sunday is service day, and probably having a belated mother's day dinner!

monday is day out! planned some stuff that would hopefully come into fruitation!

tuesday is unfortunately book in day ); but probably meeting up with army mates to have dinner (as if i havent had enough with them already >< )

week 4 of SCS foundation term is coming to a end lo! 4 more weeks to posting (:

movie weekend

ended field camp! gonna blog about it next time, because its a really long post and i want to document every bit (which im allowed to) such that i can remisce about it five years down the road..

anyway i satisfied my craving for movies by watching two almost back to back. the reason i like watching movies is because i like salted popcorn.

yeah, dumb reason right? but you can only get sweet popcorn from ntuc and places, and weird random flavours from the popcorn shops at citylink.

thus, you have to go watch movies as a facade to snacking on salted popcorn. (:

first movie i watched was with jannon and yingzhe at dhoby, Fast and Furious 5.
whoah it was pretty cool and the guys were freaking buff. The movie was action packed and i can safely say i never felt bored even for a minute.

furthermore, the movie was straight to the point, focused and indeed was a exciting one. funny part was when the rock (some number one special ops dude) turned on the law to help the Team. but it certainly made the audience happy.

i would rate this as a vey entertaining watch! A movie comparable to this would be like Ocean's Eleven. the similarity lies in the plot, where a man with a dream gets a team and succeeds in doing the impossible. the difference however, lies in that Ocean's Eleven's characters use brain; Fast and Furious uses braun.

second movie i watch was with sarena and hanle, a french film which i didnt even understand a single word. really. they had extra ticket thats why i went.

the movie kicked of slow and i was super confused at what was happening. especially since it touched on religion and terrorism and politics in algeria/ france.

but it really struck a chord in a sense (since i am christian) and i became enticed much to it.

very hard to describe, since this is the first non-english film i watched. but really, if one has time, one should catch this. the french singing hymms all add up to beautify this film.

pity i dont know any french haha

SISPEC..... Suffer In Silence, Plus Extra Confinement

i have decided.

im going to attempt to crossover. do my best in everything and chiongsua.

aka. put myself through even greater shit and tougher times.

before this gets misunderstood as arrogance, i must clarify. going to army was not exactly the thing that i wanted most.

but i have made close buddies and pals, experienced countless of events and memories. indeed, it is not everyday that one gets to shoot live rounds, throw grenades, learn offensive and defensive formations and perform them.

army has indeed changed my life. for the better i think.

i find myself mentally stronger, physically a little better.i want more of this. in these 2 years.

i have two choices. every single army boy has.

first; to hope for somewhere slack, and finish my two years without a sense of accomplishment.such a lifestyle would definitely be simpler, i could ooc [out of course] for scs and become a man, enjoy life and not bother about anything at all.

second; to go all out, whack the hardest for all i do. and hopefully get posted to ocs after foundation term. this would allow me to experience even more shit for sure: the jcc, the brunei jungles and the taiwan camps. hardship would come, but so would the memories and joy on completion. such are things one would not get elsewhere. even if i do not make it there, i would still knowingly give my all, maybe get posted as a section commander 3rd sergeant and lead my men to fight. this would be unforgettable as well.

all in all, i think i would choose the second. two years. experience life to the max.

bad day turned good

today was a bad day turned good! let me elaborate..

(i should be sleeping actually)

ippt gold really means $200 into our pockets. and $200 is a lot of money.
furthermore, getting gold for ippt means i probably dont have to do any ippt until 365 days later, which is even better (;

situps were as usual.
pullups were no kick.
shuttlerun was on the dot 10.1
standing broad jump was 234 (:

then comes the interesting part.
i had a bad bad run. in fact, i went off too slow, hit the 1.2km turning mark at 4:45
first error: i kicked the bin to throw the number tags, in which i gave a chuckle sheepishly. then as i closed in the end, i ran INTO the guy taking the time.

aka. i ran straight to him, he fell over and dropped the timer machine-y crap. he kena stun for a few seconds, then grabbed it, pressed my time.

problem: im not a fast runner. my actual timing was approximately 9:40. but the timing sergeant dropped the thingie and had to pick up to press. 9:44 is the gold timing, so i became freaking restless and nervous lah.

silver become $100 only leh, so it hung on my mind like siao.

afterward came field lessons which were interesting, but it kinda sucks to carry the equipment around lah..

anyway the ippt results came out at night. my timing was... 9:44!!!

yay that means ippt gold and $200 haha.
feeling really really thankful, because we also get to book out earlier on 13th may.

Life In SCS

I recently read through my blogposts, running all the way back to secondary 3. Fond memories of my whims and fancies replayed in my head, as i look at how much i have changed since.

Therefore, i have decided to revive my blog, with the main objective at being to have a place where i can look back upon, two or three years from now, and have a trip down memory lane.

Let me begin from my time in SCS.
This is week 2 in SCS. During this time, life in army is quite fun anf enjoyable, albeit the learning curve being much much steeper. Had SAW live firing just a few days after technical handling, which was quite scary, because everyone was afraid kena SOL (stoppage of leave) in case we misfired. And everyone was scaring each other by repeating the IA stoppage drills over and over again lol.

All in all, the SAW live firing was pretty fun and i must say, i think i've improved leaps and bounds as compared to the SAR firing in BMT.

In terms of regimentation, there has been a huge lwap from BMT to SCS. In BMT, we were really discplined and held on a tight rein, with punishments meted out at every small mistake.

In a sense, that was good because there was much deterrence to prevent us from faulting. In SCS, the rein is much looser, as we are treated as commanders to be, with ability to manage our own time and met our targets. More time would then be spent on doing things that we should be doing, which would then make us better trained and equipped soldiers.

So yup, i have been rather happy the past 2 weeks in SCS. Although everyone still looks forward to weekends everyday haha.

About getting into SCS

I must admit i was rather disappointed not to get into OCS. Having achieved Gold for IPPT, i was rather certain that OCS was a sure thing. Well, then there was a "twist of fate" and here i am, typing this in the SCS bunk.

Emo-ing over it for about 2 hours, I got over it.

For those who are in the same predicament as me [or are just kaypoh xD] :

Being perfectly honest, i put my best in BMT. Never once did i chao geng [fake injury], and almost every single training, i gave it my all.

I was utterly honest to all my section mates, never putting on false fronts and true to myself. I never sought to get favour from commanders, but performed my duties to the best of my abilities.

In other words: I did my best, in almost everything i could.

I am not able to control the posting. Probably SAF can. Surely God can.
Since i have been assigned to SCS, the best thing i can do now is to believe that I have been deemed most suitable for SCS and henceforth, taking the responsibility of doing my best in SCS. Where i go after SCS foundation term is one thing.

But right now, the only thing that is on my mind (and that sure be on yours if we are in the same predicament), is to perform my best in SCS.

21st Birthday Party

wahhh played at yingzhe's brother's birthday party with almost twenty people yesterday

celebrated minghui's birthday at Party World KTV yesterday!

first time i have ever been to ktv, so it was pretty fun.
went to the VIP lounge, which was unfortunately rather expensive, $268++ for the room itself. and the "complusory snakcs + towel + drinks" they force you into.
no wonder only rich people go there.

but overall a fun experience. but please, go there only on mondays to thursdays.

and i got back my results!

this is dumb. it happens that its just one man who is questioning the $310m Suntec deal that has somehow, with all the muttering tongues and hapless weaving of the truth by the media, has been totally transformed into allegations that CHC is another funds-mishandling Renci.

City Harvest Church member Simon Teoh, an investment banker, is critical of where the $310 million investment by City Harvest Church into Suntec will go.

He wants to know how much would be spent on the lease and how long it would last.

Troubled by the church’s response not to answer such questions on the grounds of a non-disclosure agreement with the consortium. Mr Teoh has called for more accountability and transparency from the Church.

He wrote in to the Commissioner of Charities asking for the confidentiality clauses to be rescinded and that City Harvest Church would amend its Constitution so major business deals can be put to a vote among ordinary church members.

Dear Commissioner,

I am writing with respect to the City Harvest Church investment and expenditure of $310 million for the purchase of shares in a company which owns 80% of Suntec Convention Centre and the rental of exclusive areas of the same (plus related moving and renovation costs). This was reported in the Straits Times twice over the last two weeks, including the recent queries raised by your good office.

As a member of the public and the church, I like to highlight to the Commission that todate, members (both non voting and voting) of the church have not been apprised by the Management Board of the church (“the Board”) of the salient terms of the $310m planned expenditure/investment.

Instead, the Board is pressing ahead with utilising the church’s Building Fund (totalling $65 million as end Oct 2009) and committing the church to large future liabilities ($245 million, being the difference of $310m and $65m in the Building Fund) without consulting the members/executive members at the recent AGM. No EGM has been scheduled and I am led to believe that the deal is closed.

In addition, over the last two weeks, the Board has been seeking financial commitments/pledges from its 30,000+ members to raise monies to meet the said liabilities. I do not think this is ethical, especially considering the large number of minors and vulnerable members (eg old, uneducated) in the church.

The excuse given at the recent AGM and in the public sphere for the lack of disclosure is that the Board is bound by confidentiality clauses in an agreement with the Sellers and / or Suntec management. I believe that as a large, public organisation, the Board should not have agreed to such clauses in the first place.

Although the Board is authorized as per the church’s constitution (which I only recently learnt) to commit to any expenditure it deems fit, I believe this “carte blanche” authority and the Board’s poor judgement in agreeing to the confidentiality terms with the Seller runs counter to best practice standards of disclosure and transparency as per the Commission’s code of governance for charities and IPCs (Code).

I quote section 1.3 and 8 of the Code (emphasis made are mine):

Section 1.3: Accountability to Donors

“General Principle: The charity and its fund raisers should be accountable to their donors for the donations received

1.3.1 The Charity and its fund raisers should ensure that donors received informed and ethical advice about the charity, intended use of donation, value and tax implications of potential donations”

Section 8: Disclosure and Transparency

“General Principle: As the charity operates with public support through both donations and the use of volunteers, it should be transparent in its operations to maintain the integrity of serving for public trust and community good instead of personal gain. As such, the charity should demonstrate its openness to the public by providing the public with information about its mission, structure, programmes, activities, performance and finances.”

I love my church but am puzzled by the lack of transparency and accountability by the Board who is tasked to look after the members’ collective interest. I am not suggesting any impropriety but I believe in transparency and accountability, which protects and promotes public confidence.

I humbly urge the Commission to balance the impact on public interest and the public’s confidence in Singaporean charities verses the Board’s desire to complete the deal and require the church’s Board to seek the approval from the deal’s counterparties to mutually rescind the confidentiality clauses so salient terms can be disclosed.

Secondly, I hope that the Commission will also request the church’s Board to undertake a review of its Constitution to find ways to promote more accountability and transparency to its members. For example, to make it a requirement for material proposals such as material investments and expenditure (say for sums greater than $0.5 million or $1 million) and detailed historical financial accounts be disclosed and be put to a vote by its ordinary members.

I am confident that you and members of the public will agree that $310 million investment/expenditure affecting 30,000+ members of the public are significant numbers/figures that need to be protected through appropriate disclosure and joint decision making.

I look forward to your action in the name of public interest.

about city harvest church

this blogpost might perhaps incite some comments. but then again, maybe not.
anyway...

[START]

a couple of days ago city harvest came out in the newspaper (once again), this time under investigation by the COC (Commissioner of Charities). well, to do i probably have nothing much to say, since COC is an official organisation, which i believe would stop at nothing to dig up all the dirt of city harvest, on the assumption that there is in the first place.

(as you can infer from my writing, im definitely pointed in one direction, haha)

let me address this from two highly differing perspectives.
firstly from the layman perspective:

"when controversy strikes, the organization (in this sense the church) suffers" -layman
well, there is indeed some truth to that. any new teenage believer with highly suspicious parents would probably be advised to switch to another church. parents, after all, over worry for their kids and would definitely prefer them to go to, i quote, "normal, hymm-singing" churches.
in that sense, city harvest would definitely have lost out.
[in fact if they are proven to be clean, they have a case to sue COC for loss of reputation]

secondly, from the educated man perspective:
"when you survive a controversy, confidence in you is not just regained, but strengthened" -han sheng
one thing i cannot comprehend, is why some city harvest church peeps are complaining about this incident. instead, i see it as an opportunity.
in city harvest is truly clean, no mishandling of money and stuff [which i certainly hope so], the confidence in the leaders of city harvest would definitely be strengthened and increased! after all, even gold has to be tested and trial-ed. surely, an organization that has survived the merciless scathing of the public would inspire confidence in the church go-ers.

as a conclusion, which my gp teacher says is essential in all write-ups, there can be two major possible scenarios. first, pastors of city harvest church are found guilty of corruption and boom, city harvest church attendance drops from 30 000 to 20 000 in two weeks. second, city harvest church is declared clean, and people have more trust and faith in the leadership then before. attendance might drop for a couple of weeks, but it will definitely reach new heights.

but even, i say, even if board members are found guilty of mishandling funds, i have no qualms at all.
being a christian has been an integral part of life. [a misinterpretation would say im in denial]

but God has been so real in my life, that even, even if the church is found guilty, i will not turn against my religion. because even single cent i gave, i didnt give to the pastor. i gave it as a sacrifice to God.

canoeing has ended.
not official, but ranked 11th out of all.

a far cry from what i wanted to be, at least top 6, but at least i can say that i went all the way.
i can still vividly recall (because it was just this morning) when i was queuing up for the 500m race, which i had expected to be my last.
a feeling of catharsis surged through, memories of all the 2k timings and stuff going through my head.

i browsed through my old entries about canoeing. just about a year ago. i was still a greenhorn, trying to even balance on the boat. looking at how far i have come, i dont seem to regret anything at all.

another old entry...
guess soon, i'll be at the library studying or just at the canteen, talking and reminiscing about the beginnings.

its late and im sleepy/
my mind is in a blank, cant really think properly now haha.

just wanted to post an observation i noticed of myself.
do comment if you feel the same way as me.

sometimes whenever i observe others, i find things that they have or can do, which i cant.
for example: a gangster showing off his wealth and possessions,
or a guy showing off his ball-juggling skills to others.

something then comes over me, telling me that i can do all that. and even better.
maybe it is the nature of me, wanting to be the best. the nature of never settling for second place.

but a weird sense of confidence in myself would just envelope me mysteriously.

as soon as i had pressed the "publish" button, i knew already i had made my decision.

i was hoping people would tell me to press on, because deep down inside,
thats what i wanted myself to do as well..

i rummaged through my room and found a few pieces of paper.
my weekly target/progress sheets for canoeing.

9th November: took my first ever timing.
first timing: 16:00
second timing: 14:56

and the second piece of paper was written in january

4th January: 2km first timing: 13:38
second timing: 13:03

today my personal best timing is 12:16.
after 124 days.

i had my first ever competition, today, 1km.
i did 5:44:15.

times that by two and it would be a respectable 11:48.
but it wasnt enough still.

to get into nationals 1km finals, the time i need would be 5:15
that means i have to shave of 30 seconds for 1km, 60 seconds for 2km.

it took me 124 days to cut 200 seconds.
now in 21 days, i need to cut 60.

mathematically, its impossible. can only cut 33 seconds.
logically, its impossible. the faster you are, the harder it is to shave seconds off.
physically, its impossbile. its impossible to gain a significant amount of muscle in 3 weeks.

should i just give up, start studying and get fantabulous grades for my common tests?
or press in, train every single day, even days with tests and give every single bit of my time to canoeing?

i really dont know.

take 5 was on friday, and i really really enjoyed it!
held at palawan beach, sentosa, it was a considerably better venue than last year.

[last year's was pasir ris park, so unfortunate people like me have to take the train all the way from yewtee]

also, a great difference was in the things we did.
last year, i spent my take 5 playing gladiator,

cards, frisbee and taking jumpshots/

this year, i didnt seem to do any of those.
instead, i went for the "biathlon", threw classmates into the water and took pictures with classmates.

i have really thin legs compared to them! haha

times have changed indeed.
yet, as much fun as i had at take 5, still i felt a sense of loneliness inside.

maybe its just me.

this week has been a good week, many happy stuff happening in and out of school.
many birthdays too, and i have feasted on so many many cakes!

caught a flu on thursday ):
so i didnt go for training on saturday morning.
zomg, first time i missed training, in say, 4 months?

thats quite a lot, considering i have like four trainings every week.
and holiday, i go almost five times weekly.

yup, today cell group taught me how to let go of the past.
how i should cast away negativity, to embrace an oncoming miracle.

anyway, i dug up my old blog posts, like the ones about canoeing trials and 2009 abstain-lutions, approximately one year ago and wow, so many things have happened in my life!

1. Band/Track&Field to Canoeing

i guess one of the largest changes this year was joining canoeing.
i remember despising musical ccas, mainly due to the stereotype of "band is gay".
hence, i repeatedly persuaded jeejiawoei to allow me to transfer to track&field.
right now, i kind of regret not completing band.
and i miss playing the oboe too, sigh.

and canoeing.. i hate training. honestly.
but i like the feeling of finishing training.
and i guess thats what keeps me going.
i wont quit this time (:

2. RI to RIJC got girl now

ehh, now got girl, many things have changed.
in ri, i never really cared for those around me.
hence i never really made close friends in ri.
but right now, i think i have lots of good friends in rj, so its an improvement i guess.

its getting late and im getting bored.

today, i vomitted in the morning while eating breakfast.

finally managed to break the 13 barrier! last training tmr, before jiaolian flies off to china, so i hope i can break the 13:00 barrier again!

went to Long House to eat, and it started raining, so me, dong and weekuang had some heart to heart talk. lol
about, all kinds of things. how we almost couldnt get into canoeing, trainings, people, relationships.
its just odd to see three canoeists seated and talking for an hour.

then i went to woodlands library to borrow my fiction + nonfiction political books [holiday homework] with celesup and drank starbucks!
talked to her about stuff and other stuff and yup, i seem to like talking a lot!
and java chip is (Y)

yesterday went to this bar called Wala Wala at holland v with some og friends.
well, raffles people age earlier, with a high chance due to the immense amount of GP homework.
i must confess it is a cool experience, although the drinks were mightily expensive.

there was a live band, jack & rai, and they were super good.
based on what i heard, rai was a pe teacher in rjc. lol

and it totally felt like in jennifer's body, were there was a live band playing your dedications and stuff. the setting even resembled Devil's Kettle [you would know only if you watched jennifer's body]

yup, fun experience. maybe next time when i get rich, i'll go after work to drink up my sorrows.

had been training three weeks for the Aljunied GRC Dragonboat Competition, on 8th November.

at bedok reservoir, so i had to wake at like 5.30 to reach there by 7.15.
but i still only reached there at like 8 -.-" lousy bus service!

register, change and became bored.
then everyone started stoning the stone.

the stoned stone. okay, its a brick.

took a super lot of pictures, then went for the race.
drank the BLUE and SILVER REDBULL [from austria i think] and it made a few of us go QUEASY.
yuck, super sweet luh.

completed 250m within 1:08. but we didnt even burst at the last part, cause we didnt hear the coxswain guy shout CHARGE.

-.- so we long pull-ed to the end, losing by six seconds i think.

but we, 3 weeks old paddlers with cheap cheap paddles managed to beat other teams, with experienced rowers and expensive paddles.

movies at stanford house

went to stanford's house with weiteck, ayton, karwen, dawn, gwen, vera and jesric to watch dvds.
in the end i rented "the unborn", a supposed m-18 film which they totally recommended to me and shoved in my hands, but it was totally boring and not scary at all -.-"
and the m-18 label was probably due to 3 seconds of coarse language or something -.-"

then we watched "click", which was super hilarious. i think the movie was quite a long time ago one, but i didnt watch it before. anyway it was quite a fun time.

after this weekend, no more fun till after promos liao. siannn..
on a side note, chem test was good! (:
